In El Dorado County, California, a narrow 100-year-old bridge in Placerville was deemed “functionally obsolete” by CALTRANS and needed to be replaced. But locals in the area were wary of a long summer shutdown and a lengthy detour for emergency services. Many voiced concerns about the project. So county officials wanted a solution that would not only widen the bridge but also do so in a timely manner.

That’s where precast concrete steps in. It saves time, and time is money.

Designed by SPECS Engineering Group and manufactured by Jensen Infrastructure in Lockeford, California, a 192-foot-long precast arch culvert (8’W x 22’L x 6’H) was installed in just four days by Doug Veerkamp General Engineering. The project also included precast headwalls and wingwalls, also manufactured by Jensen. The headwalls featured exposed rebar, allowing CALTRANS to cast in place a strong side rail for added safety.

By choosing a precast concrete culvert, the county landed a durable, quality-controlled solution that required no formwork, no onsite pouring, and no curing delays. Just a fully engineered bridge delivered and installed in under a week.
