When to Choose Standard vs Custom Precast

Caitlin Shanley All, Blog, News & Media, Newsletter

The type of precast concrete products you choose across the design, bid, build continuum will ultimately impact the overall costs, deadlines, and compliance needs of your projects. Here’s what you should know before making a decision. The benefits of precast concrete are well established among engineers and contractors. Precast products are more consistently uniform, require fewer onsite resources, and usually cost less than other available options. Cast in place methods may save you time and allow for more onsite configuring, but you will pay more for the additional workers it takes to build the structure while remaining at the mercy …

New Hires Need Industry Mentors

Caitlin Shanley Blog, News & Media, Newsletter

Ralph Aragon has seen it many times before. He calls it that “deer in the headlights look” when a new hire arrives for the first day of work. With 18 years in the precast industry, Aragon still remembers the uncertainty he felt when he first walked into a plant.  “It’s nervousness because there’s a lot going on,” says Aragon, Production Trainer and Maintenance Technician for Jensen Precast in Lockeford, California. “A lot of the guys we’re getting now are maybe 18 to 19 years old, and they were either a student or their first job was working at Starbucks or …

Supply, Demand, Prices, and Precast

When the dust finally settles on funding America’s infrastructure needs for the foreseeable future, one of the key areas to watch is how various resources may impact the cost of doing business. The current supply and demand for infrastructure materials, for example, may be impacting your bid opportunities, delivery dates, and pricing models for precast concrete products. As with other sectors of the economy, the leading drivers are labor challenges and material shortages, with inflationary overtones underscoring the optimism of a postpandemic market. Compared with other infrastructure providers, precast concrete prices have moved up modestly to 4.1% versus plastic construction …

The United States Pacific Northwest is a region characterized by high tech, aeronautics, agriculture, fishing, conservation, and increasing population, among many other dynamic attributes. A combination of these elements is helping fuel the prospects for two new Jensen Precast plants in Washington State. In Puyallup, Washington, an 86,600 square foot manufacturing facility is pouring 60 to 70 yards of concrete a day to replace decaying infrastructure in the region. Many of the existing structures need modernizing, including much of the rusting corrugated pipe impacting fish populations.
